During the initial years in your academic career, the goal of promotion to associate professor or senior lecturer is likely what motivates your efforts to publish, enhance teaching skills, and establish a presence in the discipline. The achievement of this milestone provides an opportunity for reflection, a reconsideration of your interests and priorities, and a thoughtful evaluation of options. We are also witnessing a transformation in academia and business due to the rise of artificial intelligence, which is changing how we perform our jobs and think about our research. At this juncture, you have likely published some significant and impactful research, met or at least progressed well toward the goals and aspirations that you initially set forth, and you may find yourself at a point where you are open to exploring new interests and opportunities in a technologically evolving landscape. In addition to the pursuit and dissemination of new knowledge through teaching and research, you may wonder about the challenges and level of enjoyment related to serving others through leadership and administrative duties, new pedagogical initiatives, and/or establishing new business/industry connections.

Academics transitioning from early to mid-career can benefit from taking some time for reflection and thinking about the open paths ahead, as well as how to integrate exciting new artificial intelligence technologies and the changes and opportunities they bring into their goals. This workshop will bring participants together with a group of mentors, all of whom have successfully navigated the mid-career journey in a field that constantly adapts to exciting new technological developments, to share and brainstorm, to co-create effective mid-career strategies.

AUDIENCE AND OBJECTIVE OF THE MID-CAREER FACULTY WORKSHOP

The Mid-Career Workshop is an opportunity for IS scholars to reflect on their existing work and strategically plan for the next phase of their careers. Generally, while every researcher who is in the mid-career stage is welcome to participate in this workshop, we believe that it would be most beneficial for those who are around 7 to 10 years after their PhD (i.e. who fairly recently completed their “early career” stage). Academics who are more advanced in their career but considering a shift in their work (e.g., towards a more leadership/entrepreneurial path) or in moving abroad to other geographical areas are welcome to attend as well. Those who have attended other mid-career workshops are welcome to participate, share, and learn from other colleagues.

The objective of the workshop is not only to learn about effective mid-career strategies but also to foster new support networks of peers that will help to continually offer peer advice and support even after the ICIS Mid-Career Faculty Workshop.

ORGANIZATION OF THE MID-CAREER WORKSHOP

The Mid-Career Faculty Workshop will be an interactive event. We will discuss the challenges and opportunities of becoming a mid-career researcher across countries and contexts in the face of changes resulting from artificial intelligence. We will also discuss strategies for the development and cultivation of networks that can help in facing challenges and pursuing opportunities. The workshop will feature round-table group discussions and panels to help create, reflect on, and promote individual career plans.
